The Wedding Choreographers and Co.

You’ve seen it on YouTube, you’ve seen it on Good Morning America…you’ve probably witnessed it at a wedding…Im talking about surprise dances breaking the old tradition of slow boring first dances and Minerva Mohabir and The Wedding Choreographers & Co. are supplying the brides and grooms with the moves to get down and boogie.

Mateo Magazine: What inspired you to start The Wedding Choreographers & Co. (TWC)?
Minerva Mohabir (TWC): In 2007, a dance was choreographed for my best friend’s wedding. It was an unforgettable grand entrance into the reception to the song of “The Way You Make Me Feel” by Michael Jackson. The bridal party was nervous but within seconds, adrenaline was pumping. All the guests were on their feet and some were even standing on their chairs as the entire bridal party broke out into a full choreographed routine with canes. It was an unforgettable moment not just for the guests but it was a historic moment for the bride and one particular bridesmaid…ME! I was so surprised by the success and positive feedback we were getting from the guests at the wedding that a few months later it hit me that ‘perhaps I should make a business out of this’. I got the pen to the paper (sometimes to post-it notes if ideas fired out of nowhere) and a year later a fun vision became reality.

MM: What services does TWC offer?
TWC: We offer professional choreography, live dance entertainment and dance lesson services for weddings, all other special events and corporate events.

MM: Have you faced many obstacles along the way?
TWC: We've been faced with many challenges but with the challenges comes rewards in just 2 short years of operation. From partnership challenges and betrayal to sole proprietorship, increased employment of choreographers and dancers plus being featured on TLC’s “Wild Weddings”, two episodes of Slice TV’s “Wedding S.O.S” and being featured in the Toronto Sun and CBC News. Now there are even serious talks about TWC having its own TV show! In a mere two years, the company has made its mark in the wedding industry as the primary entertainment team for weddings as well as birthdays, anniversaries and corporate events.

MM: What insipers you on a daily basis?
TWC: Watching everyone perform live. Its breathtaking. Our team consists of talented choreographers who are well established and highly trained individuals. La Toya Robinson, Brittany Hutton and Lauren Lyn have all performed worldwide with celebrity artists, seen in multiple music videos, movies and highly publicized dance shows. The live dance performances consist of some of Toronto’s best dancers, both male & female who are professionals in ballroom, hip hop, contemporary, African, jazz and more.

MM: What is your most memorable event to date?
TWC: One of our most memorable performances was when one of our clients was brought to tears when our dancers were hired to perform two dirty dancing routines, “Time of My Life” and “Hungry Eyes” for her bridal shower. Both the performers for this event were seen on ‘So You Think You Can Dance Canada’. It's moments like these that make all our hard work worth it!
