The Price of Being Free Print E-mail

Being ‘Free’ has its costs especially when becoming a choreographer in the entertainment industry. Choreographer, Free Crawford, has achieved an impressive array of credits choreographing Justin Bieber’s tour and music videos for Omarion, Marques Houston, The New Boyz, Justin Bieber & Tyrese. These accomplishments did not come easy and to this day others question his creative integrity.

As a teenager, Free stumbled upon his hidden talent at a house party. With no intentions of becoming a professional choreographer, he discovered his vocation when performing on stage for the first time. “I started mimicking dance at house parties. Another dancer kept seeing me and convinced me to dance on stage with him. Once I did, the applause was so tremendous I fell in love with it”. Free has been choreographing ever since.

Even though Free has accomplished choreographing music videos and tours for celebrity artists, his reputation did not come without some challenges. “For a long time, until recently, I felt like the whole industry didn’t support my hip hop or style.” His choreography style is pop(ping)-based, so some may not see it as hip hop dancing at all. If you watch the videos stated, it’s not popping. It has always been ‘why is he dressing like that, that’s not hip hop, what is he thinking’. People always criticized, questioned or gave up on him. He just remained persistent and did not focus on the negative comments and questions that crossed his path on his journey to the top. Now he is reaping the benefits as his career has taken off and seems to be getting better. He choreographed a 3D-short film (alongside Christopher Scott and Galen Hooks) "Matched" featuring The LXD as well as the opening pilot for Wayne Brady’s new show ‘DJ Radio Wayne’ and a new urban Electric piece with Omarion. Free recently choreographed videos for Baby Bash feat Slim Thug "Swanananana", Rick Ross' first artist Meek Mill featuring Rick Ross "Tupac Back" and has also been appointed as one of the head choreographers for Season 3 of The LXD. If Free never embraced his quirkiness and took major risks he would have never met these amazing opportunities to work with the best in the entertainment industry. His willingness to persevere through the natural obstacles the dance world presented led him to great heights.
